Many people with disabilities that affect their communication rely on people they trust

00:00:05.000 --> 00:00:10.000
to support them in various situations. The type of support we provide can vary depending

00:00:10.000 --> 00:00:15.000
on the situation. Some people with unclear speech might ask for my assistance

00:00:15.000 --> 00:00:20.000
in explaining what they are trying to say to other people, but in no way are they assigning me authority

00:00:20.000 --> 00:00:25.000
or power of attorney over their affairs. Recently I was asked by

00:00:25.000 --> 00:00:30.000
a woman with Cerebral Palsy to help her open up a RDSP account. We met at my office and we

00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:35.000
called the bank together, and I explained that I was assisting with communication. The bank, however,

00:00:35.000 --> 00:00:40.000
assigned me power of attorney without letting us know. For a time they would not let her deposit

00:00:40.000 --> 00:00:45.000
money into her account without my authorization. This was incredibly frustrating

00:00:45.000 --> 00:00:50.000
for her, and it took us quite a bit of time to sort it out. It really highlighted, for me,

00:00:50.000 --> 00:00:55.000
the importance of understanding the roles and responsibilities that a support

00:00:55.000 --> 00:01:00.000
person has, so that we can avoid this type of confusion.
