2. Communication Disabilities: Barriers and Impact on Choice and Control

We explore a range of disabilities that can affect an individual’s speech, language and communication; the common communication barriers that people can experience in decision-making situations and the impact of these barriers on an individual’s everyday life and access to community services such as healthcare, financial, legal and justice services.

3. Legal Context: Capacity, Decision-Making and Communication Disabilities

We provide an overview of legal capacity laws, human rights acts, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and specific articles in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. We discuss implications of these laws for people who have communication disabilities.

4. Communication Supports for Formal, Symbolic Communicators

We discuss ways to identify and provide a range of supports for people who are symbolic communicators and who speak, use pictures, symbols, letter boards or a communication devices. We focus on strategies that you can use, communication tools and assistance from support persons in the areas of understanding information, expressive communication and making decisions. We also address indicators for the engagement of Speech Language Pathology support.

5. Communication Supports Informal, Non-symbolic Communicators

We explore a range of supports for individuals who primarily communicate using body language, facial expression, vocalizations and behaviours and who rely on other people to have the preferences acknowledged, interpreted and acted upon.
